Titan Quest
With its lengthy single-player campaign, well-integrated multiplayer, and full-featured level editor, Titan Quest is a robust package that nonetheless feels all too familiar.

It is apparent that the developers at Iron Lore, makers of Titan Quest, have played more than their fair share of the Diablo games. Though it trades a pure high-fantasy feel for a mythical take on the ancient worlds of Greece, Egypt, and Asia, Titan Quest is so similar to Blizzard's seminal hack-and-slash role-playing game series that it's essentially a warts-and-all homage. It's certainly well-made enough to please those who prefer more action and less plot in their RPGs, and there are dozens and dozens of hours of gameplay to get lost in here, but it's hard to shake the feeling that you've already seen most of what Titan Quest has to offer.

Those familiar with their Greek mythology will know that Zeus and the rest of the Olympians achieved their status within the world of gods by going to war with, defeating, and eventually imprisoning their forebears, a group of powerful elder gods known as the titans. Titan Quest opens up with these none-too-happy deities being freed from their prison, and they immediately use their great powers to wreak havoc on the mortal men that worship the Olympians. In an against-all-odds fight, you'll take on the role of a hero determined to stop these ravenous gods.

Your options when you first create your hero are quite limited--you can name your character, choose his or her gender, as well as the default color of his or her tunic, and then you're off to the titan-ravaged Greek countryside. It's a little surprising how few choices you're given when choosing your hero's appearance, though since the game is played mostly from a faraway, angled overhead perspective, skin tone and hairstyle are barely even perceptible, especially once you start burying your hero under layers of armor and weaponry. There's also no hand wringing to be done during the initial character-creation process over character class, since Titan Quest handles the path of your hero in a fairly dynamic fashion as you progress through the game.

The basic rhythms of the gameplay in Titan Quest should be quite familiar to anyone who has played Diablo, its sequel, or any of the dozens of knockoffs that have cropped up in the years since. Using a mouse-heavy interface, you'll explore open countrysides, forests, farmlands, ancient ruins, catacombs, swamps, caves, and other environments that are all just rotten with unfriendly monsters. If the idea of scouring the world for treasure and clicking your way through wave after wave of enemies doesn't appeal to you, turn back now, since that's mostly what Titan Quest has to offer. The gameplay is very single minded in this regard, and the quests you'll take on revolve around the mindless slaughter of monsters more often than not, to the point that you'll likely find yourself skipping through lots of the spoken dialogue, since it's usually just a flowery way of saying "go kill this guy."

Commandos 3: Destination Berlin

In total contrast with what lies ahead, Commandos 3 starts out easy enough. The two tutorial missions are--with a single exception--a smart introduction to the key members of the commando squad and their highly specialized abilities. As in Commandos 2, the interiors of buildings are fully 3D, and it's possible to smoothly rotate the camera with the mousewheel. While the 3D segment isn't the best-looking part of the game, this extra control makes it fairly convenient to navigate the cramped rooms. The starter scenario gently walks you through the basics of the interface, which differs significantly in style from those in typical strategy or action games. Except when manually set to provide cover fire, the commandos don't act without explicit commands. Moving one character at a time is simple enough, though the lack of hotkeys for specific weapons or abilities becomes a challenge in tight spots. The tutorial's one notable failing is that it doesn't mention that the abilities menu hides choices until it's clicked on, like the one for weapons, which confused more than one of us when looking for the spy's "distract" ability.

The prologue is a taste of how, with one mouse click, the Green Beret's speed and deadly knife strike can be overwhelming in close quarters. And within the span of 15 minutes or so, you'll meet the other core commando members (whose ranks have been distilled from Commandos 2 to the core group): The sniper has the longest range of any friendly unit, the sapper is an expert with bombs and heavy weapons, the spy can disguise himself with the uniforms of German soldiers and officers, and the thief is fast and capable of climbing up walls and other objects. The sixth member, the diver, appears only once, in the third campaign. One advantage of having the number of commandos pared down from the previous game is that there's no getting confused about what each one is for, and if you ever get really stumped in a mission, solving the situation can be just a matter of stepping back and thinking about the special abilities of the commandos assigned to a specific scenario.

It's better than the original Aliens vs. Predator, and it's one of the best action games released so far this year.

In lieu of the traditional review preamble, here's the answer to the question you're probably wondering about: Yes, Aliens vs. Predator 2 lets you save anywhere. In fact, the first game is so notorious for its end-of-level-only save system that the sequel has become the first shooter to proudly list its unrestricted save feature right on the box. Monolith, taking over the series from UK-based developer Rebellion, has also added a few other things that the first game lacked, such as a compelling campaign structure, an in-game server browser, some interesting multiplayer modes, and the ability to play all the various Alien life stages. About the only thing it managed to screw up was the unimpressive single-player demo released a couple of months ago. So in answer to your second question: Yes, Aliens vs. Predator 2 is better than its demo. It's better than the demo, it's better than the original Aliens vs. Predator, and it's one of the best action games released so far this year.

The original Aliens vs. Predator was essentially a series of unrelated levels. It concentrated on creating a mood of relentless dread while relying on the well-developed and well-known Alien and Predator universes to provide an implicit story. For the sequel, however, Monolith has made a complete turnaround. Aliens vs. Predator 2 not only has a plot, but also has one of the most cleverly constructed plots ever attempted in a shooter.

Each of the three seven-level single-player campaigns takes place simultaneously. The events that are made up of one especially bad day for the humans manning a research station on planet LV-1201 are presented from three different perspectives: an alien research subject, a member of a predator hunting party, and a colonial marine who is part of a squad sent in response to a distress beacon. Though each story is self-contained, all three intersect at certain points, and the results of actions in one campaign can be seen in the others. For instance, as the marine, you'll encounter a predator trapped in a cryogenic stasis pod, which you must move so that it can fit down a ventilation shaft. During the predator campaign, it's you in stasis watching as the marine works the pod controls, inadvertently freeing you. The game is filled with little crossovers like these, and it becomes almost like a minigame in itself just keeping track of them, if for no other reason than to appreciate the impressive level of thought that went into creating the story's complex underlying structure.

Quake Wars' strong shooting model and focused objectives make it a lot of fun to play.

If you took 2003's freely downloadable Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and mashed it together with the Battlefield games, you might come up with something like Quake Wars. Of course, the whole business of the original Enemy Territory's Allies and Axis have been replaced by the humans and Strogg from the Quake universe, but the basic nature of the gameplay is unchanged. Two opposing teams still duke it out while attempting to complete a series of objectives, though this time you can jump into a bunch of different vehicles and aircraft to carry out your assaults. The concept itself isn't really new, but it's put together extremely well, and its mission-focused gameplay will appeal to veterans of these types of shooters, as well as those who have previously been intimidated by them.

The year is 2065. The Strogg race has attacked Earth in order to process its raw materials into a fuel called stroyent. If you've played any other Quake titles, you'll know some of the history here, but it's mostly irrelevant in the context of Enemy Territory's multiplayer action, so let's cut to the chase: You join either the human Global Defense Force or the alien Strogg team, and then shoot your enemies in the face.

Obviously, it's a tad more complex than this. First, you need to choose one of five classes before each match. The GDF classes will be familiar to any RTCW: Enemy Territory player; the Strogg classes have different names than the human ones, but they all boil down to the same roles. GDF soldiers and Strogg aggressors are your typical frontline troops; medics and technicians heal in the field; and so on. Don't assume that correlating classes are all exactly the same, though. GDF field ops can drop ammo packs, for example. The similar Strogg oppressor doesn't need to drop ammo, since the alien weaponry doesn't require any. Instead, oppressors can set up a tactical shield to protect infantry or vehicles.

Relatively speaking, Spellforce 2 : Shadow Wars didn’t get a lot of coverage in Australia. It was apparently quite popular in Europe, much like Spinal Tap. The lack of coverage, to be blunt, is quite a pity - the game pushed genre boundaries by combining RTS and RPG elements into a single experience. While that may instantly scream “below-par experience!”, the game was better than it deserved to be. The RPG elements, while nowhere near the complexity or depth of what Oblivion had to offer, were still about as good as any of the other action-RPG games out there. Better than many, even (Dungeon Siege, I’m looking at you). The RTS elements, while somewhat simplistic with limited tech trees and troop combinations, were also good enough to stand on their own. Overall, it really was a game that quite effectively skirted the potential chasm that always awaits these genre-crossing games.

On the other hand, it was also plagued by extremely bad camera angles, phenomenally cheesy voice acting, and bad AI. While they did get points for delivering almost all cut scenes using the in-game engine, I lost count of the number of times I watched a talking house for five minutes because the camera focused on the wrong element. That and watching your battalion of mounted horsemen get slaughtered one by one by a single enemy orc because they’re too dumb to act independently is ... shall we say ... somewhat frustrating.

In the gaming world it is a rarity to find a expansion game that seems better than the original. Spellforce 2: Dragon Strom is such a rare game.

Compared with the original spellforce 2 theres not much difference in terms of graphics, AI or game play. But there seems to be a general focus on adventure this time around compared with the original which had more focus on statergic gameplay. As always the games ability to blend both statergy and Adventure at the same time is a huge plus point for me. And in dragon storm the blend seems to be just right.

The addition of new abilities, weapons and locations to the game will make this game interesting for both newcomers to the series and for those who are familiar with it.

The expansion gives you access to exactly the same skill tree, but extends it with a new “Shaikan” category, kind-of a warrior mage. You can now summon companions that assist in battle in various ways (such as attracting damage or causing party damage) and have access to a new variety of spells (most of which focus on absorbing energy from your enemies and boosting your party).

Marine Sharpshooter 3

If nothing else, Marine Sharpshooter 3 lives up to its billing. You play a marine. You do a lot of sharpshooting. And that's about it. The box-cover blurb claims that this franchise has sold over a million copies, but it's hard to see how a game this dumb and derivative could ever develop a fan base. While the game isn't horrific looking, and there is a lot of shooting going on, all you do is stalk through linear levels sniping everything that moves. Retro shooter fans might enjoy this monotonous killing for an hour or so, then look for the uninstall icon.


Still, at least the game is topical. Marine Sharpshooter 3 kicks off with a Mahmoud Ahmadinejad soundalike at a press conference where he claims that Iran is no threat to the world and that "using nuclear weapons is against the rules of Islam." Uh-huh. It's a good thing that the US doesn't believe that nonsense because it turns out that the Iranians are both messing around with nukes and arming terrorists in nearby Iraq. So what starts as a recon mission where you're ordered not to engage the enemy unless absolutely necessary soon turns into a search-and-destroy crusade where you gun down everybody you see. "Absolutely necessary" actually comes into play right after receiving the above directive because you have to kill a half-dozen Iranian soldiers within a minute of starting the game. So much for the sanctions.

The levels resemble movie sets more than war zones. Virtually all of the terrain and architecture could have been excerpted from any of a dozen clichéd World War II shooters based on the Unreal engine. Nothing here is particularly awful, it's all just really uninspired. For example, perishing enemies display ridiculous rag-doll contortions that would put Cirque de Soleil to shame, and baddies never seem to say anything other than "Take cover!" or "Send for reinforcements!" during battle. It's amazing how so many Arab and Iranian terrorists speak such good English.

There is little to no enemy artificial intelligence in this shooting gallery either, so these acrobatic bad guys materialize from around corners, pop up from behind boxes, and appear in the back of trucks like rabbits out of hats. The jihadist thugs just stand in place shooting at you, ignoring cover inches away or running headlong at your position. Smarts are only on display during close-up firefights with pistols or machine guns, which is when you will occasionally get flanked. But most of the time, it's more like these terrorists are mindlessly running around rather than trying to save their skins or trying to kill you.

The friendly AI is even dumber than your enemies. You can swap between the titular sniper and a machine gun-armed spotter on demand, although both are brain-dead when running on autopilot. For starters, your so-called ally doesn't even bother to fire back at enemies blasting away at you much of the time. Movement and attack commands given through the simple order screen never seem to be obeyed. If you tell your pal to act aggressively, he'll just freeze in place until you tell him to follow you. Even when your teammate does actually do something like shoot back, he can't hit the broad side of a mosque. The only thing he can do is block your way in narrow corridors or on stairwells because the AI isn't even swift enough to get the hell out of the road when you're pushing to get past.

It's best to forget about having a teammate and solo through missions as the sniper until you run out of ammo, then switch to the spotter to blast through the final stages. Solo missions in the campaign (there is no multiplayer) are so formulaic that this approach works perfectly. You run forward, stop and crouch when you start taking enemy fire, then go to the scope to kill all of the swarthy terrorist types in sight. Lather, rinse, repeat. Objectives typically involve straight assassinations, or recon missions that play like straight assassinations, because you can't wrap anything without stacking up quite a few bodies.



However, even meeting these lame goals is often painful. The aforementioned AI problems are maddening, as is the ability of enemies to target you from crazy distances and apparently spot you through brick walls or tall grass. Enemies can seem to shoot you when you're totally hunkered down out of sight behind a car or a rock. Levels also involve a lot of backtracking to complete objectives because direct routes to goals are typically blocked by fences, walls, and junk in alleyways, which is a transparent attempt to drag out the game without going to the expense of creating new maps. Still, as long as you're patient enough not to run around too many corners, you'll be able to pick off most foes before you can smell the shawarma they had for lunch. But being this cautious is a real trial because the sheer awfulness of everything means that you can't help but try and rush through missions as quickly as possible.

The grueling checkpoint system and long load times only add to the frustration, but surely you've read more than enough. It's an appalling shooter on multiple levels, and it's not worth playing in the slightest.

Dig - Lucas Arts Classic

The story for ithis game was first intended to lbel a movie (it's written by Steven Spielberg by the way) but the technology of the time wasn't advanced enough to make his vision come true.

So they made an adventure game instead, and for that they should be thanked. The story starts with a space mission to save the earth. An asteroid is on a collision course with the earth and it has to be blown off up. When the team does this they find strange things inside the asteroid and after fiddeling around with some stuff it turns into a transport to another world. On this world they have to try to survive and find out what happened to the alien race that lived there before.

American McGee's Alice (ISO)

In the game, Alice has lost her mind due to a traumatizing childhood experience. To reclaim her sanity, she must fight for it through the perverse Wonderland of her imagination. In this way, the game basically has the same plot as in games such as Sanitarium. the game's fully 3D depiction of Wonderland is definitely its best feature. Many of the levels, especially in the game's first half, are remarkably well rendered. Though the art direction relies less on anything very shocking and a little too much on depicting what's essentially a dimly lit version of the conventional surrealism found in most platform games, the results are undeniably slick. A few of the levels - most notably the White Queen's black-and-white kingdom and an environment that features a realistic, normal-looking house perched atop a hellish mountain of lava and rock - are great looking and very original. However, some of the other scenarios, like a sequence of giant, rotating gear levels, settle for just being great looking.
